Greetings friends and foodies alike!
Welcome back to the blog.
Picture this: your hauling your overweight luggage through the streets, making your way to your accommodations and taking in the sights of the city when you realize that you are starving.
Your reservations for that place you saw on Instagram aren’t for another 4 hours and there’s no way you’re canceling that.
The aroma of food, no, cuisine hits your bloodhound-like nose. Is that the unmistakable scent of chocolate-covered strawberries in a cup? That can’t be crispy chicken on a stick?
A trick of the imagination? No. It’s local street food.
Today I would like for us to take a journey through the world’s best street food markets.
Fair Warning: Don’t read on an empty stomach.
St. Lawrence Market – Toronto, Canada
92-95 Front Street East, Toronto, Ontario
Ohhh Canada, how have we not talked about your food scene yet on the blog?
The St. Lawrence Market in Toronto is a top foodie destination you may or may not have heard of.
Bustling with tourists and locals alike, be on the lookout for locally-produced maple syrup, assorted baked goods, and fresh cuts of meat.
Feeling adventurous? The Market also offers cooking classes at the St. Lawrence Market Kitchen using ingredients purchased from their own market vendors.
It seems that the St. Lawrence Market offers many ways to dive into Canada’s food scene and immerse yourself in the local culture. A Gallivanters dream.
Chelsea Market – NYC, United States
75 9th Ave. New York, New York
Continuing on our journey, let’s take ourselves to the Big Apple and take a bite out of life at the Chelsea Market.
Of course, the market has plenty of the American classics: hot dogs, hamburgers, shakes – oh my.
But the unique blend of cultures in the city makes its way into its food scene and allows us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves (and sometimes bigger than our stomachs).
Try hand-pulled noodles from Very Fresh Noodles, the nation’s best tacos from Tacos Numero Uno, or lamb kabob pitas from Miznon.
Borough St. Market – London, UK
8 Southwark Street, London UK
Do you remember those viral chocolate-covered strawberries that were all over your social media a few months ago?
If your mouth was watering like mine was, you’re going to want to make your way across the pond to Borough St. Market in London.
Borough St. also happens to be the perfect place to get your fish n’ chips for the first time, and be sure to get a pic for the gram!
Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) – Tokyo, Japan
1-2, Nishishinjuku, shinjuku 160-0023 Tokyo, Japan
Last but certainly not least, we end our journey at Omoide Yokocho, otherwise known as Memory Lane in Tokyo.
Any food trend you’ve seen pop up seemingly out of no where probably came from food markets like Memory Lane in Japan.
The delectable combination that is a cook’s innovation with the simple desire to eat something tasty has created some wild, die-to-try foods that have taken the world by storm.
The market booths serve Yakitori, AKA all things skewered, crispy, fried, or grilled. Sign me up!
Well folks, now I am incredibly hungry and full of wanderlust.
I call that a blog post well, or just my status on any given Tuesday.
Til next time,
-Allison
